Hall Wall Stencil... Rubbed and Buffed!

Ok, so the hall wall stencil is DONE!  In case you're new to my blog, and have maybe missed a few of my previous posts.  I have become slightly addicted to Rub n' Buff.  This stuff seems to mainly be used for craft type projects but I saw a whole world of possibilities when I squeezed the first little blob from the tube.  I've been trying it on EVERYTHING.  I've said it before, and I'm gonna say it again...  if you aren't familiar with Rub n' Buff (I wasn't only a few short months ago) it's a metallic wax that comes in a tube, and it's AWESOME!  And no, I have not been coerced, poked, prodded, or bribed into saying so!  Here is my new hallway/entryway before and after I Rubbed and Buffed it to death.

Before,
(boring, yawn, I feel ya!)

After

It's hard to capture it's true shine and sparkle in the pictures.  I took pictures at a couple of different angles and with different light in the room so you could get a better feel for it.

I took this last picture before I was finished doing the room, but it's got good shine so here it is a again.

I'm not exactly sure at this point how I'm going to furnish the space, but I'm thinking... I'll keep it pretty sparse.  I think the walls will do all the talking!  I'll post a pic. when I've got it all figured out.

Oh and here's a tip if you're going to be jumping on the Rub n' Buff train.  Wear latex gloves, and use a cloth to rub it on.  I found that an old t-shirt works best.   If you get this stuff under your nails, it's NOT pretty, and oooohhhh did I get this stuff under my nails!  I just picture myself going into the manicurist and having a little conversation that goes something like this... Hmmm? No it's not dirt.... really.... I SWEAR... What... no... I do bathe...really... I do!!  Not nice!  But if you do get it under your nails a little paint thinner or ACETONE nail polish remover with a whole lot of rubbing will take it off.

I found the stencil online at Stencils-Decals

  1. Yeah I had forgotten about that! I feel bad I didn't warn you :( I always use a cloth to put it on too although everyone always says to use your finger. I guess it's ok on small projects but on big projects not so much. I love what you did!!!! It looks amazing! I hope you keep it this way for a while :)

  10. I used the Trellis Stencil from Stencils and Decals. Here is a link if you want to check it out http://www.stencils-decals.com/trellis-wall-stencil-2001-custom-sizes/ . You can order these to size. I used a 14" x 16" size. It took a little less than 2 tubes. The easiest way to apply the Rub n Buff for stenciling is to squirt it out on a plate then wrap a cloth (old t-shirt) around your finger and rub your finger through it. You don't want any globs of Rub n Buff on your finger because it will get behind the stencil when you're rubbing. Less ornate stencils are easiest to work with as well. Hope this helps!

  12. Wowsers! I'm redoing my bathroom and think maybe I should use this on my light fixture and existing mirror to go silver. What if I want to change the fixture back? Do you suppose it ever comes off? Or could I use a different color of rub and buff to turn the fixture antique bronze again. Just some thoughts for a pro...

    1. I went and sprayed my wall with an all purpose cleaner and gave it a scrub. No problem! Although, I can't speak for how it would hold up if you planned on giving it a scrub often. Hope that helps! : )

  15. This is beautiful. I've been thinking of doing something like this on one wall in my living room. I was planning to use metallic paint, but rub&buff would give it a nicer finish, I think. You now have *another* newest follower!

  20. I have the same stencil and have yet to start- where on the wall did you start? And how did you line it up? other directions I've seen online have "register marks?" to get it lined up well, just wondered how you did it? Hope mine looks as good!

  21. I saw this on House of Fifty and had to come check it out! You are addicted, but in a good way :) It looks fantastic. Baby wipes take it off your skin and inside your nails...I always forget to wear gloves and had to find a way to get it off. Love all your projects you used it on.

  22. You have given me the inspiration to try it on my hardwood floor in my foyer. It is in sad shape so thinking of painting. Now think I'll try this instead.

  23. I just did a cherub lamp I bought on eBay, changing it from junky-looking too-yellow brass color to rubbed bronze with Rub N Buff. Yes, I used my finger, and yes, my right hand (especially my nails) looked like I'd not washed in months, but I found that aerosol spray-on spot cleaner (the kind intended to remove "greasy stains") took it right off.

  24. Awesome. Will pin it today! I did the exact same thing but manually went in and drew out each shape (very similar to yours) and then painted over with Martha Stewart Silver. Although I like yours better! Sometimes I use these walls to photograph my vintage items on ETSY. Love your wall. Now I am reconsidering the gold!!!
