Ruffled Bed From Bed Sheets ~ How To

Ready for more ruffles.  This one is a fitted sheet, so you can sleep on it.  All you need is two king size sheet sets.  I was going to do this in white sheets, but, there weren't two matching white sheet sets.  So, I went with gray instead.  I'll make a white one later.  Plenty of backup when one goes into the wash.

First measure from the top of your mattress to the floor for the length of your ruffles.  Add an extra inch for the top hem.  I always add an extra box spring under my mattress to make the bed taller so the ruffles can be  longer.

To make the ruffles.  Fold the flat sheets in half, length wise, measure and mark for the length of your ruffles, then cut on the fold side so as not to cut off the already hemmed portion of the sheets.  Less work! YAY!

You will need to use both the flat sheets to have enough ruffles.  After cutting the sheets to size, there should be 4 pieces, sew those all together at the ends to make one long piece before sewing the ruffles.

Sewing the ruffles was super easy.   Put the end of your fabric under the sewing machine foot then pinch about 2 inches of fabric and fold it up to the sewing machine foot and sew.  Click here to see pictures of this step, from my velvet bed cover post)  Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.....

I wanted the ruffles to fall from the top where the cording is on the mattress.

So, I put the fitted sheet over the mattress then used a marker to trace around the edge.  Not the most professional way to do things I know, but it was effective.

Next lay the ruffles on the bed with the sewn part of your ruffles (stitching) on top of the marker line and pin the ruffles along that line all the way around the bed.  Then take it off and sew along the line.

Sew just slightly above the previous stitching of the ruffles, so the stitching doesn't show when you fold the ruffles down.

Put the fitted sheet back on the bed and flip the ruffles down.

Should look like this when you are done.

I put the other fitted sheet around a down comforter, for a fluffy topper.

I love this one because you don't have to take it off when it's time for bed!
The cost... only $40 bucks!
OK no more ruffles for a while!

  3. So you used two flat sheets for the ruffle and attached it to a fitted sheet and another fitted sheet to encase to down comforter, so basically two sets of king size sheets?

  4. My mom always made her bed sheets with ruffles when I was growing up. I loved it. Always wondered why it's not being sold. But now I can make my own. Thanks.

  5. This is awesome! Easy enough for beginners and inexpensive too! Drawing on the fitted sheet was so much easier than measuring all the way around. I really enjoyed this idea.

  6. Love your blog and the fact that you are totally innovative. Your bed skirt turned out beautifully! FTR, though I have sewn for many, many years I would have fitted the skirt the same way for accuracy. ☺

Re using a marker, do not know what type you used but for future fabric projects you might want to invest in a marker which will eventually fade (by itself) that can be used on the majority of fabrics. It can be found in most stores which carry sewing notions. The type I generally use is by UNIQUE and called a 'fast-fade erasable fabric marker; looks like a marker and is white with a purple cap. Shall warn, as the ink is purple in colour it may not be the best choice for very dark fabrics but otherwise it is the greatest thing since "the invention of sliced bread". -Brenda-

  7. First - I love this idea! I am trying to redo the Master Bedroom and am SLOWLY building my nest. This is a great idea since I hate changing the bedskirts but change the bedding on a regular basis. Can't wait! Now, to find 2 king sets that I like:)

    1. Ruffled sheets are not difficult to fold, it is simply a matter of holding two top corners together on the right side and the two bottom corners the same way, and then folding in half , then fold in half again until you have the desired amount for the final fold.
I have been making my own sheet sets with curtains for a long time. i recently saw the sheets mentioned at a friend and decided to make any others in like manner.
