Asian Style Coffee Table Turned Swanky Ottoman! "How To"

Alrighty!  This may be one of my MOST FAVORITE diy's.  I know we've all seen the coffee table turned ottoman many-o-times in blogland.... but, I have one more to add to the mix!  I picked up this coffee table at an estate sale for next to nothing.  I liked the legs and it's side profile, but the smokey glass top... not so much! I didn't have the glass inserts on the table for this picture because I was getting it ready to paint, but, that's what went on top, 4 smokey glass, almost black, glass squares.

First I sprayed the table with Deglosser to prep the coffee table for paint.  I always put the Deglosser in a spray bottle, it's just easier for me that way and faster!  Spray it down then wipe it with a cloth, till it's dry, then wait an hour.  I used Valspar Gloss White spray paint for the base.

I wanted to use MDF board for the top so I could keep all the "pretty" of this table's side view.
Just take your table top measurements to Lowe's and have them cut the MDF board for you.

Next I used 2" thick foam squares from Joanns.  I think it's best to cover the foam squares with batting as well but that is optional.

Next cut your fabric, make sure it's several inches larger than the table top.

On this table I did the tufts first.  To make it easy, use a staple gun with the longer staples
(heavy duty, 9/16" 14mm).  Measure and mark where you want your buttons to go then staple several times for each button spot. Click here to see an in-depth "how to" on this step

Then flip the MDF board over and pull the edges of your fabric around tightly.  I used my hand to squeeze down the foam around the edge while pulling the fabric to the back, to make it tighter. Staple, staple, staple.
You may want to switch to shorter staples for this part.

Then flip the top back over and use a hot glue gun to attach your buttons.  You can screw through the bottom side of the coffee table into the top you've just made to make it extra secure.

I love the sides of this, now ottoman, with the cutouts in the wood and the pretty Asian style legs!

All finished!

Smiles!

  2. Thanks for tip on also wrapping with batting - I can see how that'd help it look smooth. Good timing too - I actually have a cushion to make and I've already got my 2" foam!

  4. You did it again! It looks wonderful! Love the Asian style.
I have found that the foam padding is so expensive at Jo-Ann's.
If you have a Fred Meyer store (I live in Oregon.) in your area I go into their home improvement or sporting goods department and pick up their foam camping pads. They are about $18. for
a 72x36x3" piece. I just cut it too size and then wrap with batting. I have made ottomans, poufs (stacked to size) and window seats with them.
By using these I have saved tons of dollars. (Just an idea.)

  11. I love your ottoman! I have a coffee table that is almost identical to yours and I plan to turn it into an ottoman as well. However, I am a little confused on how you attached the tuffed piece (with foam and fabric) to the table itself. Did screw it together? If so, what type of screws did you use?

  12. @Dirose, that is a great tip! No Fred Meyer down here, but those foam cushions are half the price at Walmart that they are at JoAnn. Same with the batting. I'm going to check out their outdoor department for your suggestion today!
