Dining Room~ From Gold To Grey~ Makeover

Hey there friends!   Here is a formal dining room project I've been working on for awhile now.  It's just about done so I thought I'd go ahead and share.  Believe it or not this is a baby budget makeover (for the most part). Here's the room as it was.

Gold!  Can you tell the walls and ceiling are gold?  Now I love gold... but this was sponge painted gold... 80's style.  It's kind of hard to tell in the pictures, but the ceiling and walls were sponged, sponged....SPONGED, and they had been that way for... oh...  about 18 years!  So it was time for  a change.

BUT FIRST...

This is going to be kind of a long post.  I feel the need to give a little back story here.  I think I may have already talked about this ages ago but, it's been so long... it won't hurt to do it again.   I met this homeowner about... geeze, two and a half years ago now.  She was the one I met in a fabric store, because I'm a nosy, eavesdropping, barging into someone else's business, kind of girl. :) Yep that's me.  It kind of looked a little something like this, at first.

So anyway, I was listening to her explain what she wanted, or what she thought she wanted, colors and a feeling and all that stuff, and watching the sales women show her fabric after fabric, and listening to her say no.... no.... no....

Until finally I just couldn't take it anymore, and held up a swatch of fabric blurting out..."HEY WHAT ABOUT SOMETHING LIKE THIS?" to the stranger across the room.  To which she replied something like... "OOOOOOOO"  which at least wasn't  a NO~ HA  Which was my cue to jump in with both feet, and follow up with, then you could put it with this and this and you could do that and this, and look at this...
So to make a very long story short, because I could go on and on and kinda feel like I have already, She ended up taking me home, and to date we have now redone 3/4ths of her house and are going for the full Monty! AND, she has become one of my most favorite people and dearest friends.

For the record, I would like to state that I have in fact been taught not to barge into to other peoples conversations, and to mind my own bees-wax...
(It just didn't take I guess)

This was actually the fabric, and this is where it went!

So there you go a quick synopsis of how I barged into the job of redoing this entire house.

So now, finally! Back to her dining room.

In Progress...

Looking at these after pictures is a testament to the fact that you really don't need to go out and buy new furniture to get a new look.  The biggest difference was changing the paint color, and a quick recover of the chairs from a Tuscan orange fabric, to sleek grey velvet.

Here is the before again in case you've forgotten by now.

AND NOW

We found all those decanters hunting through thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, and garage-sales.  The tray came from a flea-market and the huge mirror came from a thrift store (awesome find).  So, we didn't spend much!

And now for the 50-bazillion pictures of decanters... because I love them and think everyone should have a few, cuz they're just sexy!

And bringing the outdoors in, she has all these pretty flowering trees in a small garden off her dining room.  Aren't they pretty!

Cuttings on the table!
I've been crushing on yellow big time lately, and have pops of it all over my house too.  I'll be posting some pics of that when I get things a little more in order there.

  1. A Fabulous result, you should be proud, I am sure the home owner is :). I am also loving pops of yellow and have begun to add some to my home office as I was not happy with the results of my makeover. I am even thinking about painting yellow stripes on a feature wall in my office.

    Thank you for sharing.
