Hi all! So, I'll get straight to it. If you are wanting to DIY a headboard or hang artwork in an inexpensive modern way... meet your new best friend. The hollow core door! Only $30 at the home improvement store (Lowe's)
The one WITHOUT the holes cut in for the hardware
Remember this,
which is actually artwork used as a headboard!
This is how I did it.
The doors come in different widths but a standard length of 80". A king size head board is about 74" so the door needed to be cut down to size. But, here is the beauty of a hollow core door!!!
First off it's hollow...obviously... but second is that you can cut off the end, then...
break open the end of the door you cut off. (used a hammer to knock it apart)
Take out the end strip.
Then on the open end of the door, use a hammer to push the cardboard support pieces in the middle, back about 2".
Slip the end piece in and use a hammer to knock it into place.
Sand it down, so that it's smooth and pretty. You can use a little wood filler if you end up with any gaps. Then paint it. I went with black here.
Then use a spray adhesive to attach your image! Click here to see my previous post to see how to make your own digital image, if you missed it.
You can attach picture hanging hardware to the back then hang it on the wall. Works like a charm.

The hollow core door works great for upholstered headboards too!! Just use foam and cover it with fabric. You can use staples to attach the fabric to the back of the door or you can use nailhead trim to go around the edge. The options are endless really. Another bonus is the doors are relatively light so they are easy to move around and hang!
