OK so Flashing is that stuff you use on your roof, right? Looks that way from the picture on the roll. I couldn't tell you what to do with it there, but, I can tell you lots of things to do with it inside!
Here is one of the things I saw when I looked at it.
A desk redo!
Here was the desk before.
and... here it is now!
The Flashing I used was a relatively thin roll of aluminum, which is perfect for creating a stainless steel look. The cool thing is you can cut it with metal sheet scissors. Just measure, mark, and cut your pieces, then attach them with nailhead trim.
Of course my trusty "Silver Leaf" Rub n' Buff went around the small trim pieces for a more seamless look.
How cool is that? It's super reflective! But just like your refrigerator, you do have to clean off your finger prints.
So what do you think?

This is awesome! You are a woman after my own heart....I'm always wandering the aisles of Home Depot thinking of what creative things I can do with the stuff I see. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at those rolls of flashing and wondered...now you've given me inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. I love it. What a transformation. How did you adhere it to the desk?
ReplyDeleteI used strips of nailhead trim. I ordered it online from http://www.beaconfabric.com/vindex.html?cat148.htm
DeleteHope that helps!

This is amazing - looks so PRO !! I love it !!
ReplyDeleteGenius !!!! What did you use to "glue" it on? Liquid Nails??
ReplyDeleteI attached the flashing with nailhead trim. I used the kind that comes in a roll. I guess it's more like, faux nailhead trim. I got it online from here.http://www.beaconfabric.com/vindex.html?cat148.htm

okay, did you really cut the metal with that tool and not draw blood??? would scoring w/ a knife have worked? obviously, i need a step by step photo tutorial. today.
ReplyDeleteoh, yes, i'm totally stalking you now.
It's easy to cut! Cuts like butta. Blogs are the one thing you can stalk without having a restraining order placed against you, so.... stalk away! lol
DeleteThis is SO amazing! Absolutely love it.
ReplyDeleteIncredible makeover! Wow! So super cool!
ReplyDeleteTo be clear, when you said the trim around the desk, do you mean all the grooved wood pieces? Like the beveled edge of the desktop?
Thanks!
Becca
yep! you got it!

This is just the coolest thing I have seen in furniture in a long time. I can't believe this is flashing! I am wondering if you can age it too like you can with zinc! I am getting some flashing at Home Depot, today!! Visiting from DIY showoff.
ReplyDeletePS I host a linky party every Friday-Sunday, I would LOVE it if you would come by and link this up. By the way, we share a similar name. "Redoux"!
Hmmm, don't know about the aging. I haven't tried that. Let me know how it turns out if you do!

OMG! this is incredible! And so original! I just found your blog from Whisper Wood Cottage, and now you're on my favorites list! This desk is stunning, I can't get over it. I just gilded a chair in gold leaf (http://www.brittanymakes.com/brittanymakes/2012/01/gild-a-chair-in-gold.html ) but it's nothing compared to this!
ReplyDeleteWow! Truly amazing!!! Thank you for the inspiration to tackle my own project! Following you from Whispering Wood Cottage...will for sure continue to check out your projects!
ReplyDeleteLove, Love, Love it!! I have a question it looks like you redid the legs of the desk. The before and after legs are different. I have a very similar desk and wanted to see how you tackled the feet.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
Kelly
Hi Kelly! The curved decorative pieces at the bottom of the desk in the before picture, were attached with what looked to be finishing nails so I just pulled the pieces off... well, actually, knocked them off with a hammer.
DeleteHope that helps!

Any way to get a step by step guide, id like to do that toa floor cabinet that i just bought
ReplyDeleteI'll see what I can do! Just have to find another piece of furniture first! : )

Thanks again for sharing! I am sharing at my party tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteThat is really fantastic - I have to try that! I love metallic anything. Where did you get your mail heads (I know that they make them in a continuous line - which would make that job easier!). How long did it take you?
ReplyDeleteGreat project. Love your blog. Come visit mine as well. Thanks.
Linda
Hi Linda! Thanks. I used the nailhead trim that comes in a roll. I got it online from http://www.beaconfabric.com/vindex.html?cat148.htm
DeleteIt didn't take all that long to do.
Hope that helps.

ReplyDeleteI think my 17 year old daughter would go NUTS for this!
Thanks for sharing!!
I just found a very similar desk for $39 at a thrift store in Atlanta. I sent my daughter a photo by phone and minutes later it was in my trunk. I can't believe no one else picked it up! We can't wait to get started on our project for her new apartmemt. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteVery cool. I know this was a LOT of work, too! Nice job.
