Ruffled Velvet Bed Cover ~ How To

Hello everyone.  Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  I've been working on "how to" posts all weekend myself.  And now, a dreamy bed cover "how to".  As promised here are the details for my ruffled bed cover.  This bed cover is gold velvet, yep, VELVET.  16 plus yards of it.  Ok, see how my ruffles look really long from the top of the bed to the floor?  That is because I have added an extra box spring under my mattress to make the bed taller.  So if you only have 1 box spring under your mattress like most people do, your ruffles are going to be/look shorter.

First let me say that I am  BY NO MEANS a pro at sewing.  I'm just a girl with a sewing machine, who knows how to make it go in a straight line.   So, if I can make this, you can make this, and if you know how to sew really well, you can probably make it way better!   Anyway, the point is, this is pretty easy to make.
Here it goes.  This is a king size bed cover.  The bed is 74" wide and the fabric is only 54" wide, so you'll have to cut your fabric length wise, and there is going to have to be a seam somewhere.  I chose to make it at the top of the bed so the pillows will cover it.

I'm going to try and keep the explanation as simple as possible.

Measure the width of your bed and add an extra 2".  Roll out your fabric and cut, like the picture below.  You're going to need to cut  a second piece for the top of the bed.   Sew the two pieces together.

Now for the ruffles.   Measure from the top of your bed to the floor, add an extra 2", 1 for the bottom hem and 1 inch to sew to the top piece.  Now, if you don't want to sew a ton of different pieces of fabric together, just roll out your fabric and cut like the picture below.  But, you will have a lot of extra/scrap fabric.  (Depending on how long your ruffles are you may be able to use this scrap for the 2nd top piece.)
I wasn't sure how much fabric I was going to need to go all the way around the bed, so I cut each of my pieces about 4 yards long then sewed my ruffles one piece at a time, measuring it against the bed to see how much more I needed to sew.  Just be sure to sew your next piece of fabric to your already sewn ruffled fabric, before you start sewing more ruffles.

Or, if you don't want to have a lot of scrap fabric you can cut your fabric like the picture below, but you will have a lot more pieces that need to be sewn together as you go.

Ok, now how to sew the ruffles.  Super easy.  This bed cover has a fancy but casual look, so the ruffles don't have to be perfect.  I think that adds to its charm.  First sew your bottom hem.  After your fabric piece is hemmed, put the edge of the non-hemmed side under your sewing machine foot, then pinch and fold the fabric up to the foot and sew. Do try to pinch and fold the same amount of fabric each time though.  Keep the edge of your fabric lined up as you fold up to the foot.

I just used the bottom of the sewing machine as my guide for pinching.

This seems like it would take forever but it went pretty quickly.  It will look like the picture below when you're done.

Next, attaching the ruffles to the top piece.  Lay the top piece pretty side up on your bed.  Then lay your ruffles pretty side down on top of the top piece.  Pin the edges together all the way around the bed, then take it off and sew.

That's it really, and it should look like this when finished!

Oh, and look at this!

This one is a little different and actually made from 2 bed sheet sets!  It's even easier to make and you don't have to take it off at night.  It's also way less expensive.  Will post that soon!
