Bye Bye Halloween

Halloween is over, and I have to say it was a bit of a bust!  We had a whopping 3 sets of trick or treaters. : (
My spooky digs went to waste.  Here are a pics with everything all a glow.  I love candle light!

And then the inside,  I didn't do much decorating for Halloween inside. 

So at 9:00 we decided to close up shop, and after a cocktail or two... a group of us decided to run up the street to this,

Notice how the sign says 8+ ... Well, we were the +.  We pulled into the neighborhood and it was insane, kids everywhere, all ages into late teens, parents too.  Then I realized why we only had three trick or treaters.  Everyone was at that neighborhood.  It was pretty awesome really, seeing everyone in the Halloween spirit.  There were people dressed in scary costumes running up to the car with weed whackers.  Yes, I said WEED WHACKERS, it was crazy, fun, but crazy.  Then we found the haunted house, and after a half hour of sitting in the car going, no... we can't go in... it's for kids, really we shouldn't... we went in. And then we came out, and I was on the verge of a epileptic seizure, from all the strobe lights, and a heart attack from all the crazy people with power tools jumping out at me and grabbing my feet.  Ahhhhh, god I love Halloween.

Halloween Decorating Ideas

I was saying before that I never really decorate inside for Halloween only outside. I sort of skip straight to Thanksgiving decorating for inside.  But... I was surfing the web today and came across the PoeticHome.com blog for Halloween decorations, and I was inspired!  I think it is a little late to start throwing up Halloween decorations around the house now but next year I will keep these great ideas in mind, and put Thanksgiving on hold!

Grace from PoeticHome.com used black chalkboard paint on hardback books, then hung them above her mantel.  R.I.P on the books in chalk is just genius!  She also used a repurposed architectural salvage sign to cast an eerie glow.  Love this!

Here she used black tacks to write letters on pumpkins to spell out complete words.  So clever.

Halloween Decorations

Halloween is almost here, so I thought I would revisit my outdoor decorations this year, one last time.  I never really talked about what I did out there.  So here goes,
Here is my poor bare door, when I started,

Then my Grim Reaper came out to play.  Oooooh spooky!  I used dead tree limbs, dirty garden stones and old pieces of wood, trying to create a sort of decrepit old cemetery feel.

Then there is my mummy and spider on the other side of the door.  Again I used some dirty garden stones, and then some broken and non-broken pottery, and dead grass.  The dead grass part takes some planning. 

And then my poor skeleton, the birds have picked him to the bone.  And then more broken pottery and dead grass, as well as dried ornamental grasses.

A tip or trick (pun intended..you know trick or treat) an easy way to make a spider web looking back drop is to use gauze that you use for a wound.  Just pull it apart all the way to a single mesh like layer.

Ghostly Night Out

In the spirit of Halloween, I made several little ghosts out of pillow cases and foam balls.  Then stuck metal rods in my plant containers to suspend the ghosts in the air.  The foam ball for the ghost's head just sits on top of the the metal pole.  In the candle light, you can't see the poles and the ghosts look like they are floating.

To make the ghost, I placed a foam ball at the sewn end of a pillow case then used a piece of white yarn to tie the pillow case closed under the foam ball.  Cinching the pillow case closed under the ball creates the arms of the ghost.  Then I used black plastic beads with stick pins for the eyes and mouth.

Boo- tiful!  Fun for an outdoor dinner party!
